June 2013 Update: This fictional adventure laced with historical facts has proven to be eerily prophetic. In a scene (page 47) that could have been ripped from current headlines, non-profit organizations are targeted with government audits that require years of back records. Those many charities failing the strenuous tests are closed. In another chapter (page 84) characters express fears of a looming World War III. On one hand this story is an action/adventure/fantasy for readers age 8 to 12, but on a deeper level it’s a commentary -- and a warning -- for adults about the dangerous path our nation has chosen.
Michael planted the idea seed when he came home from the Howey-in-the-Hills Library where he volunteers and said to me, "We should do a story for kids about an owl that lives in a library." That seed germinated and over a two year period it grew into The Battle for the Book of Good Deeds. It began as a screenplay, but we quickly saw that the extensive CGI (computer generated images) required would make it too costly for all but the larger studios so we switched gears and wrote the book.
Can an orphaned boy's steadfast belief in a legend about an ancient book protected by an immortal owl restore hope to a world ravaged by evil? Join Marty, his older sister, Ginny, and their grandparents on this action-packed quest as they follow the clues left by a World War I soldier to find The Book of Good Deeds and you may discover the power of the good that lies within you own heart.
These wounds will steal my life from me
Where evil reigns across the sea.
To stop its wicked wretched spread
There is a book that must be read.
Pass through the gate with reverent awe
Where sleeping wait for earth to thaw.
Beneath the words of God you'll find
Entombed good deeds of all mankind.
